A Note from Juror
Dan Lee
As a full-time graphic designer and lettering artist, this show is such a privilege to celebrate the versatility and beauty of what can easily be the most overlooked visual artifacts in our lives. Words and letters typically serve such a utilitarian purpose, and it takes real effort to engage them with fresh eyes as carriers of more meaning than merely their sounds and definitions. Prominently isolated or crushed together, rendered like sculptural fossils or with elegant brushstrokes, centered for thematic resonance or stripped of immediate legibility to become striking texture — the effects are varied, the possibilities endless. It’s been a joy to convene these artists’ approaches to reimagining the written form, unified in the assignment and gorgeously varied in execution.
