Meet the Juror
Alex Pigeon

Alex Pigeon is an artist and arts professional that has been working at commercial art galleries in New York City since 2016. His self-taught photographic practice explores notions of belonging and identity amongst both peers and the landscape, and has been exhibited at the Photographic Resource Center in Boston, MA and CultureLab in Long Island City, NY. A New England native, he now lives in New York’s Hudson Valley region.

I was asked to be the juror by Jill Benson, who I met through a course on gallery management that I help to facilitate and teach. SAGE does great work building community and supporting local and emerging artists, and I was very glad to become part of that through this open call. It's not always easy to put your work forward for submission, and I'm truly grateful for every artist that participated and encourage everyone to continue exploring the world through photography. It's a medium that I adore, and it was exciting and inspiring to see work from artists across many regions, styles, and subjects. I made the selection somewhat intuitively. I was drawn to the images that contained a layer of ambiguity. Some are very tender, or grand, and others are tense or uncanny. I hope together they create a story that people will enjoy exploring.
